The association has a national seafood committee and a global membership of more than 150,000 people.
It is concerned about a number of trends affecting Australian seafood, including increased demand for the species by consumers and an increase in demand for seafood from countries with poor environmental standards.
In 2017, the Seafarers Federation reported that Australia had the highest amount of fish caught in the world but that the amount of seafood produced was declining.
Seafood production and export is the primary sector for the Australian Seafarer’s Association.
It says about two-thirds of the industry’s workforce is employed by the association.
It also says Australia’s seafood industry is growing by 20 per cent annually.
“The primary industry is the seafood processing and shipping sector which is up by a lot, but there are a lot more jobs associated with that than you’d see in the restaurant industry,” Mr McGovern said.
“There’s a huge amount of new jobs, a lot greater demand for fish, and a lot higher turnover than you would see in a typical restaurant business.”
He says the industry is on the brink of a crisis.
“It’s really a very complex issue,” he said.

Mr McBrien says there’s a need for change.
“Right now, we’re just getting by on a boat, on a dinghy,” he says.

“When you’re a consumer, you don’t want to think of a fish as a commodity, but as something that is available to you, and it’s worth something to you,” he explains.
